I am proud and excited to announce the dates for FATB Sri Lanka 2014! This is a
return-visit to Sri Lanka for Flutes at the Barns, and promises to be a most amazing
musical experience as well as a chance to explore this most beautiful of countries.
Places will be strictly limited, and issued on a first-come, first-served basis.
Flutes at the Barns Sri Lanka
Monday 21st April to Thursday 1st May 2014
Course Schedule (provisional, details may vary slightly)
- Mon 21st April - Arrival at Desire, which will be our base for all musical activities
for the duration of the course. Enjoy a welcome tropical drink as you get to meet
the other participants of FATB Sri Lanka 2014!
- Tues 22nd April - Morning free, afternoon flute playing. Visit to a local Sea Turtle
farm in the evening.
- Wed 23rd April - Morning flute playing. Afternoon visit to a local wood carving
factory. More flute playing after the evening meal.
- Thurs 24th April - Early start to visit to morning catch being brought into the fish
market (optional). Afternoon and evening flute playing.
- Fri 25th April - Journey to Yala for an afternoon safari, hoping to spy elephants,
lepoards, monkeys, alligators, and many more! Overnight stay in the centre of the
park, keep your eyes peeled to spot more visitors from your room.
- Sat 26th April - Travel through the lush tea country, with stopovers to visit a tea
plantation and factory. Continue into the mountain to spend the night at St Andrew’s
Hotel in Sri Lanka’s highest town, Nuruwa Eliyah.
- Sun 27th April - Enjoy a leisurely descent through the mountains to Kandy, to visit
the Botanical Gardens and the venerable Temple of the Tooth, one of Buddhism’s most
holy sights. Overnight at the Thilanka Hotel, Kandy.
- Mon 28th April - Visit to Pinawela, the elephant orphanage, for morning bathtime
and chance to feed the elephants! Return to Desire, afternoon and evening flute
playing.
- Tues 29th April - Morning flute playing. Afternoon boat ride, spotting local flora
and fauna. Evening flute playing.
- Wed 31st April - Flute playing all day, culminating in an informal end of course
concert at the local Wedding Hall. Evening barbecue to celebrate the end of Flutes
at the Barns Sri Lanka 2014.
- Thurs 1st May- Depart Desire.
Accommodation and Meals
Accommodation will be in two large mansion houses, Desire and Mandalay, for the duration
of the course; whilst on ‘tour’ accommodation is provided in first class hotels.
Each participant will be accommodated individually in luxury and spacious rooms,
with air conditioning and ensuite shower rooms. For those not staying at Desire,
transport from Mandalay each day will be by car, minibus or tuktuk!
Meals will be taken together, mostly at Desire, whether in the open air by the pool
or in the bar overlooking the palm trees. Food will be freshly prepared to the highest
standard on site; menus will incorporate local produce as well as more traditional
Western dishes.

Don’t forget, your application is not complete until you’ve also paid your deposit
of £250 (please do not send a deposit if applying as a reserve). You can pay the
deposit using PayPal, or send a cheque.

All places on this course are now full, however applications are invited for those
willing to be held on the reserve list for this very special course; in the case
of cancellation by a current applicant reserves will be offered in order, on a first
come first served basis.
Practical Matters
Course fee - £1750. (A £250 non-refundable deposit is payable upon booking; the
full balance payment - the further £1500 - is due by eight weeks before the course
begins. After the deposit is paid, you have the option to pay in three £500 instalments,
due February 2013, September 2013 and February 2014 respectively)
The course fee will be fully inclusive of individual accommodation, transfers, transport
and excursions around Sri Lanka, all breakfasts, most other meals and refreshments,
all musical activities.
(Not included in course fee: your flights to/from Colombo, Sri Lanka, up to three
days of meals/refreshments ‘on tour’ and any spending money. Advice will be offered
on booking flights.)
Partners may accompany flute participants and share their accommodation at a reduced
cost of £1200, taking full part in any activities. There is much to do for musician
or non-musician partners, whether their interests lie in travel, photography, cooking,
reading....
International participants welcome.
